I wanted to share some lessons learned from our journey at Ridgeline implementing data analytics across the consulting practice.
What worked:
- Starting with quick wins — automating a painful monthly report got instant buy-in
- Pairing data-savvy team members with domain experts
- Making data accessible (dashboards, not just spreadsheets)
- Celebrating data-informed decisions in team meetings
What didn’t work:
- Trying to change everything at once
- Over-investing in tools before people were ready
- Expecting everyone to learn Python (it’s about data literacy, not coding)
The hardest part: Getting senior leadership to trust data over gut instinct for decisions they’ve been making intuitively for 20 years.
What’s been your experience? Anyone else leading a data transformation in their organization?
Great insights, @marco.diaz! As VP Finance, I’d emphasize the leadership buy-in challenge. What worked for us was showing the CFO a side-by-side comparison: a decision made with traditional analysis vs. data-enhanced analysis. When the data-driven approach caught a risk that the traditional approach missed, that was the turning point.
As someone earlier in my career, the training aspect really resonated. The most helpful thing for me was having a mentor who could translate between “data speak” and “finance speak.” The LearnWorlds Data Analytics course has also been great for building foundational skills.
I’m a junior analyst and wondering — what tools should new professionals focus on learning? Is it more important to master Excel/Power BI first, or jump straight to Python/SQL? Any guidance from the experienced folks here?
